2015 Lexus RX – Smooth ride, luxurious interior, Hybrid option

Published on November 24 2014

''For the 2015 model year, the Lexus RX 350 Sportdesign and 450h Sportdesign benefit from a slight exterior refresh and additional features. ''

Sold since the late 1990’s, many rivals have joined the midsize SUV segment since the arrival of the Lexus RX, but even then the new 2015 Lexus model is worth a gander. Comfortable and quiet, with lots of features to consider, a choice of several engines including a hybrid variant, and a great reputation for reliability, the new RX deserves some attention.

For the 2015 model year, the Lexus RX 350 Sportdesign and 450h Sportdesign benefit from a slight exterior refresh and additional features. Within the RX lineup, there is actually three models available, offering either a powerful or more fuel-efficient option for buyers.

For example, consumers can choose between the base model in the RX family - RX 350 Sportdesign, or the RX 350 F Sport that offers a sportier vibe. There is also the option of a hybrid model: the 450h Sportdesign.

Starting with the 2015 Lexus RX 350 Sportdesign, this version gains several enhancements for the new model year, such as perforated leather seat surfaces, heated and ventilated front seats, driver’s seat memory, a sunroof, 19-inch wheels, and silver painted roof rails, among others.

The RX 350 Sportdesign is equipped with a 3.5-litre V6 engine, producing 270 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque. The engine is coupled to a 6-speed automatic transmission with sequential shift mode and overdrive for responsive shifts, good acceleration, and fuel economy ratings of 13.3/9.8 litres per 100 kilometres (city/highway). This model also has a towing capacity of 1,587 kg.

As for safety, features like stability and traction control, and a rearview camera are standard, and depending on the package, a blind spot monitoring system, intuitive parking assist, and a voice-activated navigation system are available.

The RX 350 F Sport is equipped with the same V6 engine as found under the hood of the base model, and is paired to an 8-speed transmission with paddle shifters. This model is for consumers that want more Lexus F Sport design incorporated into their SUV. The RX 350 F Sport provides F Sport styling, F Sport leather seats, 19-inch F Sport aluminum wheels, and of course, F Sport badging, among other features. Like the base trim, this model also features 40/20/40 split second-row seat that owners can recline and slide, plus a remote release for the cargo area.

Finally, the RX 450h Sportdesign gets a revised front bumper and grille, and benefits from several features found on the RX 350 Sportdesign model. A Lexus Hybrid Drive (3.5-litre V6) engine paired to an electric motor, and a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with sequential shift mode powers the 5-passenger hybrid vehicle. Expect a total output of 295 horsepower from this vehicle, and the choice of three different drive modes: Eco, EV, and Snow. Fuel economy ratings for the hybrid model are 8.0 and 8.5 L/100km (city/highway respectively).

Features found on this model (and others, depending on the trim), include a 12-speaker audio system, satellite radio, a push button start, and a dual-screen rear DVD entertainment system, the latter of which is optional with the Executive package.
