2017 Lexus RX: the star of the Lexus family

Published on October 31 2016

The Lexus RX is the crossover that started it all. It was the first luxury SUV to hit the market almost two decades ago, and was therefore a pioneer in what is today of the most popular segments, not to mention one of the most profitable.

Today the 2017 Lexus RX remains firmly at the top of the luxury crossover segment in terms of sales. Perhaps the reason the Lexus RX is so popular is that it provides an unrivaled blend of comfort, performance, refinement, luxury amenities, design, and yes, even fuel economy with the Lexus RX450h hybrid. And then there are the safety characteristics of the 2017 Lexus RX that make it one of the best options in a crowded segment for buyers that want to provide the best protection for their families.

Safety comes first in the 2017 Lexus RX

The 2017 Lexus RX gets standard blind spot monitoring which warns the driver that a vehicle is in his or her blind spot both in an urban environment and in the city as well as Rear Cross Traffic Alert that warns you of an oncoming vehicle when backing out of a parking spot or your driveway. That system is particularly useful in a sport utility vehicle. The 2017 Lexus RX’ Rear Cross Traffic Alert can even detect pedestrians, just like the SUV’s forward collision warning that will emit a sound when an object is detected in front. If the driver fails to react, automatic emergency braking takes over and will apply the brakes for you. On the highway, an intelligent cruise control system will keep a predetermined distance with the vehicle ahead and slow down the RX on its own should traffic slow down.

There is also a lane keep assist feature that will bring you back into your lane if you unintentionally begin to drift, but not before the lane departure warning system gave you an audible warning that you are moving away from the center of the lane.

All of these features and more are offered in the Lexus Safety System+ package which will be standard on most new Lexus models by the end of the year.

Safety and performance

No question about it, the 2017 Lexus RX is one of the safest compact luxury SUVs on the market. That said, it is also fun to drive. Two versions are offered starting with the Lexus RX350 which starts at $55,800. It is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine that delivers 295 horsepower. If fuel economy is your main priority, you can turn to the 2017 Lexus RX450 which is powered by a hybrid engine that delivers a combined 308 horsepower along with an average fuel economy rating of 7.7 liters per 100 kilometers in the city.
